Spring is here!

Things are really ramping up here on the homestead. Spring is always a busy, but exciting time. We see green grass, our hayfield is less brown, and we hear the birds singing in the morning (until our dog chases them off, lol). These sunny mornings remind us of what is to come!

We have been out a few times checking on all of our hives and assessing where we are at and what we need to do next. Unfortunately, we lost some hives over winter. In past years, we have just waited to split hives and start new colonies, but with the quantity of hives we have out now, we may need to look at other options. Either way, we know we will be fine. It is part of caring for bees.

Our chicks are 3 weeks old today. They are all doing very well. I am happy to report that we have only lost one chick, so far. Praying that is the only one we lose, but we know that is highly unlikely when temperatures are still dropping so low overnight.

The piglets and lambs are still doing very well, also. They are so ready to get out to the pastures, but they are just a little too muddy, yet. Any day now… I hope!

We had our first transplanting day on Monday. All our seeds are starting well, besides our marigolds. I think I need to break down and buy new seeds. We have been using older seed packets for a while, so I think this may have been the final pack. Our next steps for produce are to get our new garden started and finish preparing the greenhouses.

This is just a little rundown of what we have going on here. We hope to post updates more regularly, but as things get busier, it is harder to keep up. Thank you for taking time to read through our posts. We love sharing how things are going with our friends and family.

On a side note, our youngest has finally learned how to ride his bike!! For those of you that know us personally, know that he has terrible eyesight. Now that he has his proper prescription, he is reading ALL the time and figuring out his depth perception. He can balance his bike and even got to ride on the trail around the local gym. It is like a whole new world to him. Now, all of our boys are on their bikes as much as possible. We are so thankful for this life!
